Today was a good day! Bouncing around the UP for beer and winter fun.
The Vierling Restaurant and Marquette Harbor Brewery was my very first MI brewery! Summer of 1996, back home and fresh outta the Air Force. I was the ripe old of age of 21, with little knowledge about craft beer. Not sure what I was drinking back then. Left my cell phone in my car so I couldn’t take a proper beer photo.
This is Marquette’s oldest, and one of the state's oldest breweries. There may be bigger names locally, but I don’t think you’ll find a better combo of craft beer and food in town. Go for the beer, stay for the Whitefish!
Want some Marquette history? You’ll find it here. This building has stood for over 100 years and has been brewing small batch beer since 1995.
Today’s beers were the “Laid Back” Session IPA. A true IPA. Lite, bit of malt & hops, and at 5% quite crushable. Their Porter is another 5% beer. Also a good, flavorful beer. Nothing fancy here. Just doing beers right!
You want a solid beer and great food, this is your place to eat and drink in Marquette!
No matter what time of year you find yourself in the UP or Marquette, there’s always outdoor fun to be had. A Saturday in February provided just that. Now that the Lower Harbor is completely frozen, it allows for views of the Ore Dock that are rarely seen.
When Lake Superior freezes over, the number of activities are endless. From ice skating, walking the dog, CC skiing, ice fishing, or just site seeing. One of the more interesting activities I witnesses was a game of Frisbee Golf on skis. Standing on the sidelines watching, but really in me head I was thinking “hey guys, can I play”? It looked like a blast!
My love for the upper peninsula grows bigger each time I visit. The people. The food. The nature. THE BEER!!!
